My specialization is sociology, with a particular focus on research in regional sociology. I go out into the field, observe the lives of regional people, listen to their stories, and search for relevant materials. I’m sure there are people who are unclear as to what it actually means to research regional communities—what does the field actually conduct research on? Perhaps people find it hard to appreciate the significance of focusing on local communities in a modern society increasingly defined by globalization. However, in order to understand what is happening to our modern society and to predict how society will change in the future, there is increasing value in investigating the social phenomena occurring at a local level. This is what contemporary regional sociology believes its purpose to be. I hope that I can make a valuable contribution to this GCOE from the perspective of a regional sociologist.
