In order to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, one of the most pressing issues is the need to substitute natural energies, such as biomass, for the fossil resources currently being used. Wood biomass accounts for 90% of all biomass; it can be produced in mountainous regions and areas of low precipitation, without interfering with food production. As such, expectation is rising for the potential of wood biomass as a next-generation resource in sustainable supply. However, wood biomass contains lignin, a persistent chemical compound, which prevents biomass conversions such as enzymic saccharification. Lignin is a material that was originally acquired during the evolution process in order to ensure that vegetation not be used by other animate beings. The key to effective biomass utilization lies in our ability to effectively command this substance.
