Message

Japan's economy is now fully matured, and our population is beginning to be affected by a declining birthrate and an increasing number of elderly citizens. In this context, unstructured land use is badly affecting the quality of life in urban centers. In order to maintain a high quality of life going forward, transport, buildings and green spaces in urban centers and agricultural village communities need to be coordinated as integrated stock, and subsequently reorganized into attractive, quality stock. This will contribute to long-term policy on CO2 emission reduction, which is focused on creating "Compact Cities", and is one of the keys to maintaining both a low carbon society and important biodiversity; it is an issue that is fundamental to Japan in the 21st century, as it is for urban and national planning throughout the rest of the world. The main themes of my research are the construction of appropriate theory as well as practical policy and practice.

Research Themes

My research focuses on more than just the static presentation of ideal urban centers, such as Compact Cities, it also examines methodologies for dynamic achievement processes (Smart Growth in urban centers in developing countries, Smart Shrinking in urban centers in developed countries).

  1. Modeling and international comparative research on economic development, urbanization, motorization, and environmental impact in developing countries
  2. Smart Shrinking strategies for sustainable urban management in countries experiencing declining birth rates and a rapidly aging population
  3. Evaluation methods for social capital and national urban spaces based on Quality of Life(QOL)
  4. International comparative research on transportation strategies and technological and policy methods for lower carbon emissions
  5. Study on urban land taxation and urban planning systems for the formation of attractive urban stock
