名古屋大学と南京大学の学術交流協定にもとづき、環境学・気候学の研究・教育の交流を、定期的に促進することを2009年10月山本進一教授(名古屋大学 前副総長・理事、総長特別補佐)と安成哲三教授の南京大学訪問時に、南京大学気候・地球変化研究院(院長 Fu Congbin教授)と合意した。
この合意に基づき、共同研究の推進と、教育交流の可能性をより具体化することを目的とした第1回のワークショップを開催することとなった。
